Do It Yourself
DIY, or 'do it yourself', is a concept that first came to prominence in the 1950's, used in reference to home improvement projects involving building, modifying, or repairing something independently, sans the help of experts in the field. DIY, however, entails more than the mere desire of undertaking a given task without supervision. Basic knowledge of the subject is welcome, as well as some sort of professional guidance. In fact, there are many 'do it yourself' magazines, TV shows and videos available that can be used as a starting point. Planning plays a major part in any project, as do organization, and a realistic schedule and budget. Before opting for a DIY approach, the individual must weigh in the pros and cons, and determine whether it would be more cost effective to employ an outside party, either as help, or to take over the entire project. Of course, at the end of the day, it is much more rewarding to complete the task by oneself.
